🎾 Home Cooking Coco Gauff rallies from a set down to edge Elisabetta Cocciaretto, 3-6, 6-4, 6-3, at her home tournament in Miami. The #4 seed avenges last month's straight-sets loss to the Italian in Doha, though she sprays 11 double faults along the way. The reigning Roland Garros champion is still managing an arm issue that forced her to retire at Indian Wells.
🎯 Class Dismissed Carlos Alcaraz takes care of Joao Fonseca, 6-4, 6-4, in their first career meeting on the Miami night session's biggest stage. The world #1 handles the 19yo Brazilian who'd captured the tennis world's imagination over the past month, including a deep run at Indian Wells where he pushed Jannik Sinner in the 4th round.
👀 Rising Son Tick Tock Tennis One to Watch alum Rei Sakamoto earns his first career ATP Tour victory, taking down Aleksandar Kovacevic, 6-4, 3-6, 7-6⁷, in the Miami Open 1st round. The 19yo Japanese wildcard converts his fifth match point after multiple rain delays and a white-knuckle tiebreak to set up a 2nd round clash with #9 seed Daniil Medvedev.
💬 Glass Ceiling Iga Swiatek calls her current form "the worst nightmare for an elite tennis player" after falling to compatriot Magda Linette, 1-6, 7-5, 6-3, in her Miami opener. The world #3, who lost the match despite winning the 1st set 6-1, admits she played better when she wasn't overthinking things. Polish analysts on the "Break Point" podcast note she looked subdued in the final games, lacking the competitive fire that once defined her.
🔥 Slam Prophecy Victoria Mboko dismantles Anna Blinkova, 6-2, 6-0, to reach the Miami Open 3rd round for the first time. The 19yo Canadian fires 32 winners, converts six of seven break points, and wins the final eight games of the match. During a rain delay, Mboko retreated to the locker room for her go-to calm-down activity: cards. (She prefers to stay off her phone in those situations.) Meanwhile, Andy Roddick makes a bold call on his podcast "Served," predicting Mboko will win a slam within the next two years.
🎾 Rain Check Amanda Anisimova needs all three sets and a whole lot of patience to get past Ajla Tomljanovic, 6-1, 5-7, 6-4, in the Miami Open 2nd round. The American dominates the opener in 33 minutes, then watches a match point in the 2nd set slip away when a rain delay hands Tomljanovic a lifeline. The win is Anisimova's first over Tomljanovic in three meetings, and it exorcises a 2021 San Jose collapse where she blew a 6-1, 5-3 lead.
🌟 Kid Takeover Five teenagers reach the Miami Open 2nd round for the first time since 2007. Moise Kouame (17), Darwin Blanch (18), Rafael Jodar (19), Joao Fonseca (19), and Rei Sakamoto (19) all advance. The last time five teens reached the 2nd round here? 2007, when del Potro, Querrey, Korolev, Djokovic, and Murray did it.
💔 848 Days Jennifer Brady is back. The former world #13 and 2021 Australian Open finalist returns to competitive tennis after 848 days away. A knee injury first sidelined her in August 2021 after the Olympics. She fought back for six tournaments in 2023, only to need surgery again in October of that year. Brady kicked off her comeback at an ITF event in San Diego in January, surprising everyone with a run to the semifinals. For now, the 29yo is taking it day by day, focused on small wins and simply being part of the circuit again.
🎾 Night Owl Mirra Andreeva survives McCartney Kessler, 6-1, 6-7³, 6-1, in a match that stretches into the early hours of Friday morning in Miami. The 18yo takes the 1st set in 21 minutes, loses her grip in a 2nd-set tiebreak, then rattles off the final six games of the match. It's revenge for a straight-sets loss to Kessler in Montreal last year, squaring their head-to-head at 1-1. Andreeva finishes with 24 winners to 21 unforced errors.
🎾 Servebot Supreme Reilly Opelka fires 25 aces past Jack Draper, 7-6³, 7-6⁰, in a match where break points were very hard to come by. The 6-foot-11 American, who proudly wears the "servebot" label, renders the #25 seed's return game irrelevant. Draper, still in the early stages of his comeback from a bone bruise that kept him off tour for seven months, takes it in stride. Miami is just his third tournament back.
🔥 Twenty-Twenty Elina Svitolina dispatches Emerson Jones, 6-2, 6-4, to become the first player on either tour to reach 20 match wins in 2026. The 4-time slam semifinalist sits at 20-4 on the year, two wins clear of Daniil Medvedev (18). Svitolina's aggressive retooling has produced a title in Auckland, a final in Dubai, and semifinals at the Australian Open and Indian Wells. She now sits at world #8, her highest ranking since returning as a mom in 2023.

Giri Nathan profiles the Daniil Medvedev resurgence in The Second Serve. After splitting with longtime coach Gilles Cervara, Medvedev teamed up with Thomas Johansson and Rohan Goetzke and immediately found results: a title in Kazakhstan to close 2025, then Brisbane and Dubai to start 2026. At Indian Wells, Medvedev upset Carlos Alcaraz in the semifinal, 6-3, 7-6³, before falling to Jannik Sinner in a pair of tiebreaks in the final. The serve is back, the forehand carries conviction, and Medvedev himself rejects the "defensive player" label. As Sinner put it afterward: "I do believe that tennis needs him."
In a separate piece for Defector, we got a double dose of Giri Nathan who turns his attention to the teenage takeover unfolding in Miami. Moise Kouame, born in 2009 (which, yes, hurts to type), drew Nathan's attention last month in Montpellier, where the Frenchman became one of the youngest players since 2000 to qualify for an ATP main draw.

"Tennis feels complicated in my head. I know it's supposed to be simple. In terms of my mentality and how I feel on court, it's going to take a while." - Iga Swiatek on her struggles after falling to Magda Linette in the Miami Open 2nd round ¹
"It's been a tough week but I don't know, it made me realize how much I love this sport and I love playing it. Even though it's tough, I think I enjoy the ups and downs through the journey." - Coco Gauff on her three-set comeback at home in Miami ²
"To be honest, I didn't remember that I had a match point with all the delays so that's good for me." - Amanda Anisimova on the rain interruptions during her three-set win over Ajla Tomljanovic ³
"Before the match, I was kind of nervous a little bit. The first match of the tournament is never easy. You want to find your rhythm. You want to play well and set the tone for the rest of the tournament." - Victoria Mboko on her dominant 6-2, 6-0 win over Anna Blinkova ⁴
"I'm kind of learning from my mistakes, I guess. So I'm just super happy to win this match, super happy to get the win tonight... this morning." - Mirra Andreeva on her late-night victory over McCartney Kessler ⁵
"The hardest part was not knowing when I was going to compete again. That uncertainty was probably the scariest thing." - Jennifer Brady on her 848-day absence from professional tennis ⁶
