✂️ Clean Break Peyton Stearns confirms she and coach Rafael Font de Mora parted ways after the Australian Open, saying, "I'm not going to dive into that" when asked for a reason. Font de Mora remains under active WTA Tour investigation following safeguarding complaints filed by Pam Shriver and a second former player during the Australian Open. Stearns has been working with Roberto Ortega since the Qatar Open.
⚖️ Point Taken Rinky Hijikata reaches the Round of 16 through the very strange sequence of events. Facing Luciano Darderi, crowd noise interrupts the point, Darderi stops play and points at the stands. Video review awards the point... and the match... to Hijikata. Why? Well, since no one on Hijikata's side caused the disturbance, Darderi effectively hindered himself by stopping the point. Tennis rules are undefeated.
🌴 Home Cooking Learner Tien fires 15 aces and wins 82 percent of 1st serve points to upset world #8 Ben Shelton 7-6(3), 4-6, 6-3 at his home Masters 1000. The win moves Tien into the Indian Wells Round of 16 for the first time. The 20yo, coached by Michael Chang since July, is now world #23 and improves to 2-0 career against Shelton.
👗 Dust Up in the Desert! Aryna Sabalenka sweeps past Jaqueline Cristian 6-4, 6-1 to extend her win streak against players ranked outside the WTA Top 20 to 23 straight. Awaiting her in round 4? Naomi Osaka! It will be the pair's first official meeting since the 2018 US Open fourth round. Sabalenka now moves past Maria Sharapova to seventh on the all-time WTA 1000 match-wins list since 2009, with 137. Only Victoria Azarenka, at 209, has more among active players.
📈 Streak Show Jessica Pegula drops the first set to Donna Vekic, wins the next two 6-2, 6-3, and extends her run of consecutive WTA-level semifinal appearances to seven. It's the longest streak since Agnieszka Radwanska went from Beijing 2015 through Indian Wells 2016 with consecutive final four appearances. A semifinal finish here would make her the first player since Maria Sharapova to reach eight straight.
🔧 New Motion Jack Draper opens his Indian Wells title defense with a 3-6, 6-3, 6-2 win over Roberto Bautista Agut on a rebuilt service motion, switching from pinpoint to platform stance. The Brit also moves to natural gut strings to protect the left arm injury that cost him eight months last year. Though the 1st serve percentage sits below 60 percent, Draper wins 88 percent of those points when it lands and saves six of seven break points.
🏆 Set Collector Jannik Sinner drops serve in the opening game against Denis Shapovalov and then wins ten of the next twelve to close out a 6-3, 6-2 result in 71 minutes. The win is his 96th at Masters 1000 level, drawing level with Fabio Fognini for the most by an Italian since the series began in 1990.
🌵 Desert Bloom Three unseeded players take down seeds on Saturday. Antonia Ruzic defeats 2024 Olympic champion Zheng Qinwen 6-4, 7-5 in her Indian Wells debut. Ashlyn Krueger battles back from 6-3, 5-3 down to eliminate #19 seed Liudmila Samsonova 3-6, 7-5, 6-2. And Sonay Kartal edges #20 seed Emma Navarro 6-1, 3-6, 7-6(2) after Navarro serves for the match twice and cannot close. In the Round of 16, Ruzic faces #13 seed Karolina Muchova, Krueger faces #9 seed Elina Svitolina, and Kartal faces #15 seed Madison Keys.
🎾 Bottled Service Coco Gauff leads the WTA in double faults for the second straight year. 430 in 2024. 431 last year. And that's despite working with biomechanics coach Gavin MacMillan, the man who rebuilt Aryna Sabalenka's serve, since last summer. Analyst Rennae Stubbs calls the problem 90 percent mechanical, but notes the mental weight compounds once the numbers start climbing.
⏱️ No Thanks Carlos Alcaraz improves to 13-0 in 2026 with a 6-2, 6-3 win over Grigor Dimitrov and confirms he has not spoken to the ATP about the shot clock rule since his Qatar Open outburst. And he has no plans to. His reasoning is blunt: other players have complained before him, and nothing has changed.
🗓️ Fix Wanted New WTA chair Valerie Camillo has launched a Tour Architecture Council tasked with addressing a schedule players have called "insane" and "too intense," targeting changes as early as 2027. Jessica Pegula, who chairs the council, says the first call last week was an open airing of complaints, and admits no one has concrete answers yet. Maria Sakkari, also a council member, calls Camillo the best possible person for the job.
🌿 Ciao, Bruxelles The Italian Tennis Federation has reportedly acquired the rights to the Brussels ATP 250 for more than $24 million, with plans to move the event to Milan as a grass-court tournament from 2028. The ATP would retain a 10 percent stake, and federation president Angelo Binaghi is already pushing for an eventual upgrade to ATP 500 status. Italy would then host the Italian Open, the ATP Finals, the Davis Cup Finals, and a fourth standalone event.
🎌 Kei en France Kei Nishikori is 36yo, ranked #284, and still in France. The former world #4 came through qualifying at the Thionville Challenger, beat Clément Tabur in the first round, lost in three sets to finalist Nicolai Budkov Kjær. The Japanese veteran continues his journey at the Cherbourg Challenger this week. The longest roads in tennis sometimes wind through northern France.

Michael Chang: The Puzzle Maker When Michael Chang first noticed Learner Tien, it was by accident, a brief encounter in Hong Kong early last season, a young left-hander on a nearby practice court. A few weeks later, Tien stunned Daniil Medvedev in five sets at the Australian Open. Chang's previous high-profile project was Kei Nishikori, whom he helped to a Top 10 ranking and the 2014 US Open final. Read the full feature at ATPTour.com.
Fashion Had Already Got There There is a particular kind of lateness, Luce Martini writes at The Catcher, that announces itself by arriving dressed for the occasion. Her essay on the ATP's new "Athlete Arrivals" format, unveiled at Indian Wells on March 5, complete with editorial shoots, dedicated styling, and the involvement of former GQ fashion director Mobolaji Dawodu, argues that fashion moved into tennis years before the ATP showed up to open the door. Read the full essay at The Catcher.

"I've been doing everything you've wanted for the last six months, and it's gotten not better at all, bro." - Coco Gauff to biomechanics coach Gavin MacMillan during her Dubai semifinal ¹
"I think [her problem], it's 90 percent mechanical and 10 percent mental. The problem is that the 10 percent becomes 50 percent once the serve starts going off, because bad technique breaks down under pressure." - Rennae Stubbs on Coco Gauff's serving struggles ¹
"I don't want to waste my time because there have been other situations where you go to complain or to give your opinion and then nothing changes at all." - Carlos Alcaraz on why he won't lobby the ATP over the shot clock rule ²
"Well, it would be for sure a fashion show at the beginning. Then a crazy match. She's a great player. Came back after pregnancy. Incredible shape. I have been watching her matches, really admire her." - Aryna Sabalenka on facing Naomi Osaka in the Round of 16 ³
"Ben came out not feeling 100 per cent. I don't think he's been feeling great all week, but he's an amazing competitor and he came out and gave it his all. So I just want to say, huge props to him. I'm super happy to be in the fourth round. Especially here, it's extra special." - Learner Tien after defeating Ben Shelton ⁴
"I can't say I have an actual idea. I think just more flexibility would be a quick fix to just show the players that we're trying to fix this. It's probably not the perfect long term plan." - Jessica Pegula on what the WTA Tour Architecture Council can deliver short-term ⁵
