👶 Ring Leader World #1 Aryna Sabalenka said yes. Georgios Frangulis, the 37yo founder of acai brand Oakberry, got down on one knee during a Tuesday dinner surrounded by white rose petals. Carlos Alcaraz and Novak Djokovic were among the players flooding her comments with congratulations. The woman who has spent 80 weeks atop the WTA rankings arrives in Indian Wells as something she has never been before.
🌟 GOAT to GOAT Turns out, Novak Djokovic is just as excited about a Serena Williams comeback as the rest of us! At his Indian Wells pre-tournament press conference Wednesday, #3 seed Novak Djokovic shared his theory on where and when she shows up: Wimbledon, possibly preceded by a doubles run alongside Venus. Insight!
🏆 Sonmez Arrives Zeynep Sonmez makes history at Indian Wells, taking down McCartney Kessler, 7-6⁷, 6-0, to become the first Turkish woman to win a main draw match at the event. Sonmez already owns a long list of Turkish firsts: first Turkish player to reach a slam R3 in the Open Era, first Turkish woman to win a WTA title since 2016. Indian Wells is the latest checkpoint on a road she is building herself.
✊ Threat Assessment Italian player Lucrezia Stefanini steps forward with a chilling story ahead of her Indian Wells qualifying match. In the early hours of Wednesday morning, a WhatsApp message arrives on her personal phone: a photo of a gun, the names of her parents, her birthplace, and a demand that she lose. The WTA responds quickly, increasing her security detail and escorting her to her car after the match.
🚨 Badosa Blues Former champion Paula Badosa exits Indian Wells in the 1st round with a 6-4, 6-2 loss to Yulia Putintseva in 1 hour and 23 minutes. Badosa, now ranked outside the top 100 (#106) and managing an adductor injury, commits 47 unforced errors across two sets.
📰 Ticket to Safety The ATP reverses its evacuation policy for players stranded at the cancelled Fujairah Challenger. After initially proposing to charge each player €5,000 for a charter flight, a figure exceeding the champion's prize money, the tour confirms the flight will be fully funded at no cost to players. The vast majority of Dubai-based players have since departed safely.
👀 Tell-All Juan Carlos Ferrero is preparing to break his silence on his split with Carlos Alcaraz. The former coach teases a YouTube interview dropping Thursday, hinting that the full story of their December parting has not yet been told. The split reportedly stemmed from a contract disagreement after Alcaraz finished the 2025 season as world #1 with two slam titles.
🎾 I Still Believe Stefanos Tsitsipas opens up about the back injury that defined his 2025 season. The Greek says the physical pain forced his body to shut down and his confidence followed. The lowest point came after the US Open, when he questioned the entire direction of his career. He arrives at Indian Wells ranked #43 and opens against Denis Shapovalov feeling, by his own account, fully himself again.
🎾 Coaching Carousel Update Giovanni Mpetshi Perricard arrives at Indian Wells with a new face on his practice court. The 22yo Frenchman begins working with Francisco Roig, who spent 17 years alongside Rafael Nadal from 2005 through 2022, starting with Nadal's first French Open title. Roig has since had stints with Matteo Berrettini and, most recently, Emma Raducanu. Arthur Fils recently added Goran Ivanisevic to his team, giving France two young players now working with coaches who helped build world #1s.
🎾 Another New Coach! Zheng Qinwen adds Marcos Baghdatis, career high world #8, to her coaching team at Indian Wells. The Chinese star insists head coach Pere Riba remains in her corner despite widespread rumors of a split, calling his absence a "temporary period of rest." Seeded #24, she opens against Antonia Ruzic or Jennifer Brady, returning from elbow surgery with a rebuilt serve and renewed confidence.
⚔️ Buzz Cut Defending champion Jack Draper is back in Indian Wells with a shaved head, a rebuilt left arm, and about seven months of work he refused to rush. The British lefty returns for just his 2nd event since the US Open last August, having spent the layoff retooling his platform serve and learning, by his own admission, from the mistakes of past comebacks. Ranked #14, Draper opens against Fabian Marozsan or Roberto Bautista Agut, with a potential R4 date against Novak Djokovic waiting down the road.
🏆 With Mixed Success Taylor Fritz and Elena Rybakina take the title at the Eisenhower Cup mixed doubles event at Indian Wells, taking down Learner Tien and Amanda Anisimova, 10-7. The pair, who also won the event last year, stepped in to fill spots vacated by Daniil Medvedev and Andrey Rublev, whose harrowing delays traveling from the Middle East made them unavailable.
📰 Tiley's Top Goals Craig Tiley closes out two decades at Tennis Australia and takes over as USTA CEO at mid-year. Speaking to Tennis Channel, Tiley sets an ambitious goal: grow American tennis participation from 27 million to 35 million players by 2035. His four-point US Open framework: more screens, more shade, more seats, more space.
👀 On Her Own Coco Gauff arrives at Indian Wells without her coach, Gavin MacMillan, who remains stranded in the Middle East amid regional airspace closures. Gauff says she is monitoring the situation day by day, but doesn't have a clear timeline on when MacMillan will arrive. She has spoken publicly about the human cost of the conflict, going well beyond what it means for tennis players specifically.

"We were a bit uncertain because we didn't know what to do, what plan to adopt, whether to go out or stay in. Finally, yesterday we managed to fly from Oman to Istanbul. That's how it went, thank God." - Karen Khachanov on escaping Dubai ⁴
"I'm happy to have been able to tell my story. It was a very beautiful, very special step. Now we have to move on, but I'm glad I was able to explain a little bit of what happened." - Juan Carlos Ferrero ahead of his interview on the Alcaraz split ⁵
"Well, I obviously had NO idea this was happening tonight 😂" - Aryna Sabalenka on her engagement ⁶
"I feel like I wouldn't be here, wouldn't be in the tournament if I didn't feel like I could go all the way again." - Jack Draper on his Indian Wells return ⁷
"She's coming back. Is she coming back? Is that a question?" - Novak Djokovic on Serena Williams' rumored comeback ⁸
